This position is located at the Vermillion County Jail/911 Dispatch Center. All Jail and 911 Dispatchers are dual trained for both positions and you will be assigned where you are needed.
As an entry level Correctional Officer, incumbent serves in a developmental capacity, under the overall supervision of a Supervisory Correctional Officer with on-the-job training (OJT).
Correctional Officers enforce rules and regulations governing facility security, inmate accountability and inmate conduct to ensure judicial sanctions are carried out and inmates remain in custody. Provides custody and security of inmates including observing actions of inmates. Conduct pat and strip searches of offenders. Restraining and securing sometimes assaultive inmates; escorts/transports offenders by walking and/or vehicles (day and night time). Submit disciplinary reports on inmate violations of rules and regulations and submit reports on illegal or questionable occurrences. Conducts inventory of individual inmate property and documents. Assist in the supervision of inmates in living quarters, visitation booths, during recreational activities, while in transit and during sleeping hours. Count inmates at designated and random times as instructed. Maintains accountability of inmates assigned to work detail. Respond to emergency situations such as escape, suicide, riot and other disturbance, in accordance with Department policies, procedures, rules, regulations and post orders. Perform other related duties as assigned.
The Dispatch Officer will work in the Communications Center which is a twenty-four hour, seven days per week operation which includes rotating 12 hour shifts that include nights, weekends, and holidays. Being the primary answering point for all emergency (911) and service calls from the public, this job fast-paced and requires multi-tasking skills and the ability to make quick decisions in violent and/or highly emotional situations while maintaining a courteous, calm, and effective demeanor utilizing a multi-agency Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system. You will enter and retrieve data in the system, process general information requests for the public or other agencies, and will assign, track, monitor, and disseminate information to field units via appropriate radio frequencies and computer systems.
Must be 18 years of age.
High School Diploma or GED
Possess and maintain a valid drivers' license.
Must be able to possess a firearm
Must pass pre-employment testing
Pass a thorough background investigation of character and personal history
Must pass a polygraph
Must pass Drug and Alcohol Screening
Must pass Pre-employment physical examination to include TB testing prior to entry on duty (cost incurred by applicant)
Must be able to work 12 hour, rotating shifts
This position is identified as High Potential Risk (HPR). All applicants and selectees for employment are tested for drugs and are subject to random drug/alcohol testing.

Must be 21 years of age or older and a high school graduate or equivalent.
Must submit to background investigation and polygraph exam
Must possess excellent keyboarding skills, ability to multi-task and utilize several computers at once.
Must be able to handle both fast-paced, high-stress situations that require quick decisions that can be followed by periods of downtime.
Must be able to work a wide variety of shifts (mainly 12-hr shifts) including nights, weekends and holidays.
